I always like checking in on the Man Candy poll throughout the week and seeing one of our man candy candidates getting a ton of fan support which is exactly what happened this week with Liam Hemsworth. Right from the start, Liam had a sizable lead and despite a few other strong rallies from fans of some of our other candidates, Liam held on to that lead and brought home the win. It isn’t hard to see why fans are so supportive of him. He’s gorgeous, of course, but he’s also talented and seems to be a fairly down to earth guy.
I had no intention of seeing Last Song. It just didn’t strike me as my kind of movie and, to be perfectly honest, I just wasn’t that excited to see Miley Cyrus attempt this kind of role. I had never been a fan of the girl and I didn’t expect this movie to change that. The plot sounded decent but I just wasn’t sure it would be worth the price of admission. A dear friend, however, was a huge Miley Cyrus fan and wanted to see this one in the baddest of ways. I told her I’d go with her if she picked up the tab and prepared myself for a less than thrilling night at the movies. I was wrong on all counts. Miley did a fantastic job and I enjoyed the movie. It wasn’t Miley I was thinking about when I left the theater though. It was a young actor named Liam Hemsworth.
I was already a big fan of Liam’s older brother, Chris Hemsworth, and in my experience, when it comes to siblings in Hollywood, one is usually more talented than the other. When it comes to this family though (including brother, Luke Hemsworth), that really doesn’t seem to be the case. I’m not as familiar with Luke, but Chris and Liam consistently turn out solid work. When asked about having two brothers also acting, Liam said “we are brothers and we are always competitive, but it is a good thing, it pushes us and we are always happy when someone books something”. After Last Song though, I have to admit I was pretty excited to see where Liam would go from there. It was obvious, to me at least, that Liam had big things in his future but I had no idea just how big.
When I heard Liam had been cast as Gale in The Hunger Games I was excited for him. This is a huge franchise and a huge opportunity for this young actor to make a name for himself. Right now, as sad as this kind of is, Liam is really most well known for being Miley Cyrus’ boyfriend but The Hunger Games could change that. Liam has the talent and charisma to be a star in his own right and this franchise gives him the chance to prove that. While we don’t see much of Liam in the first film in the series, that will change and I look forward to that.
Confession time. I wasn’t crazy about The Hunger Games. I loved the books, I loved the cast and I loved the story but I left the theater feeling a little bit underwhelmed. I went to see it about two weeks after it hit theaters and I suppose it was really just a matter of expecting too much going in. With that said, I think the cast did a great job and I enjoyed it enough to look forward to the next movie in the series. My opinion really doesn’t matter though. The movie was a massive hit and there’s little doubt the next one will be even bigger. This is fantastic news for any Liam Hemsworth fan. This franchise allows him the chance to let people see what he can do and make his own name for himself and I, for one, can’t wait to see where this takes him.
Of course, I can’t write this profile without talking about Liam and Miley just a little bit. Their relationship hasn’t always been an easy one. They’ve broken up and gotten back together a few times but they’re young. Very few couples their age, especially when they have such hectic schedules, are able to avoid a few bumps in the road. I think they seem like a happy couple. Will they get married, have babies and live happily ever after? I have no idea, but it would be nice to see a young Hollywood couple buck the trend and live a long, happy life together. They’ve already found their way back to each other a few times. I’m really rooting for these two, as long as Liam steps out of Miley’s shadow and shines on his own as well. He definitely has the talent to do it. There’s no reason he should ever settle to be Mr. Miley Cyrus. With six projects in various stages of completion (and another Hunger Games film on the way), I don’t think he has anything to worry about. You’re going to be hearing the name Liam Hemsworth a lot more in the future and I can’t wait.
